Laser cut trial and experimentation
This week's update is that I have had a successful trial with the laser cutter, everything was very straightforward, and Peter was super helpful with explaining how to set up the files properly, and answering questions regarding parts of the design. That was very important because now I have a way to visualize what it looks like before I make any more changes to the design.
I really like how this turned out, however now that I have it, I realize that there are a few things I want to change. The engraving between the shapes might look better if they were a bit darker, and the shapes could use a little something more. There are a few other small patterns I've been looking at to see what works best with the original pattern, and I decided one of the best ways to do that was to look for wallpapers from the '70s and the '90s, I've noticed that those times had the more interesting shapes and patterns without being all neon and straight lines.
I've been wanting to experiment with some of the shapes I found inside the patterns, but they haven't worked quite right yet, there's one I wanted to add to be laser cut that I plan on booking this week to try out before I make any final decisions. I did end up deciding to use the wood, I'm more familiar with the material and I enjoy what it looks like when it's been worked on.
My print file ended up being a bit different than I thought it was going to be, but as previously mentioned I do enjoy the result. I tried two different things with this to visualize some of those cut that I plan on making, as you can see one of them worked and the other didn't because I forgot that an extra outline would only separate those inner pieces, and the other did work the way I wanted it to.
